He Promised He’d Buy Realty Income at the Open. He Came Home at 1 a.m.

As a birthday present, the Little Man received 11,500 SEK from all of us.

His grandparents are only arriving today, but they sent the money yesterday anyway. Of that 11,500, he transferred 7,500 straight into his endowment insurance at Montrose — almost exactly 65 percent. Same account he used when he put 45 percent of his first salary to work. No speech. No negotiation. Just the transfer.

The last thing he said before he left for university at noon was that he would buy Realty Income (O) the second the U.S. market opened at 15:30.

I have never been to university. Apparently the first three weeks — especially the first one — are mostly “bonding.” Which, from what I can tell, is a polite word for pub nights.

My husband called him at 16:00 and asked if he had bought the shares.

“Absolutely.”

My husband hung up and laughed out loud. “He has definitely not bought any shares.”

He walked through the door just before 1 a.m.

Grandparents in a couple of hours. I really hope he is vertical by then.

The 65 percent is still sitting in the account. O is still waiting. University 1, dividend plan 0 — for now.

Anyone else living with a young adult who can sound like a portfolio manager at noon and a freshman at midnight? Tell me in the comments. I need to know I’m not the only one doing the math at breakfast.
