Four Drivers, One Car – The Sicilian Driving Experience

We’ve left the beautiful vineyard in the Sicilian mountains and have been staying in Giardini Naxos for the last few days. Yesterday we took a day trip to Syracuse.

One thing I’ve noticed is that drivers in southern Sicily are slightly better than in the north. Here they only create 1.5 lanes out of each road instead of turning two lanes into four, like they do in Palermo.

However, stopping and yielding are still considered optional, which has forced me to take on defensive driving to avoid dangerous situations.

Our current rental car is a 2026 Peugeot 508. Thanks to new EU regulations, it now beeps loudly three times every time I exceed the speed limit — which happens quite often when trying to keep up with the local traffic rhythm.

So right now there are effectively five drivers in the car — and I’m the only one holding a steering wheel. My best friend whispers that I’m driving too fast, her husband and my husband say I’m driving too slowly, and the car itself is constantly scolding me with its beeping.

My patience is being severely tested.
