The Silverfish Incident – Proof That Some Things Must Be Experienced

We only have a few days left in Sicily before heading back to Stockholm. However, the world’s (currently not) most perfect teenager has already returned home after two weeks in Croatia.

For years I have nagged him about throwing away candy wrappers and glassine paper immediately so we don’t get pests. This past year he has insisted on changing his own bedding.

I asked him to do it before he left for Croatia. His response? “It’s not necessary.”

I was literally a hair’s breadth away from changing his bedding myself before we left, but I decided not to.

When he came home and was about to go to bed, he discovered a silverfish in his room.

This is the first time we’ve ever had a silverfish in this apartment. For those who don’t know, it’s a small, silvery, fast-moving insect that thrives in slightly damp environments.

My son, who absolutely hates insects and bugs, lost his mind. He has now thrown away the entire mattress and all the bedding, disinfected the floor, desk, and shelves like a man possessed.

Some lessons, it seems, cannot be explained. They must be experienced.
