Shotgun Wedding, 57 Years Later

Today is my parents’ 57th wedding anniversary. I was born at the end of January the following year, which means my mother was already about four months pregnant when they said “I do.”

Even though both of my parents came from modest backgrounds, both my grandmothers were very keen that the wedding happen before I arrived. Looking at the wedding photos, it’s very obvious my mother was pregnant. The dress doesn’t hide much.

Whether that visible bump was her quiet rebellion against her mother and mother-in-law, I’ll leave unsaid. All I know is this: when I was seven months pregnant myself, my belly looked roughly the same size as hers in those pictures. If that was the case… go, Mom.

Anyway. Happy anniversary to the best parents in the world. 57 years is no joke.

Have you ever found something in old family photos that completely rewrote the official story? Drop it in the comments — I’m collecting them.

Update – August 17, 2026
My mother insists on announcing that by the time I was three months old, she weighed 47 kg.
