When I met my husband, I had no idea he had been investing in the stock market since he was 17. He got me interested, and a year later, at 25, I bought my first share.
Six years later we sold everything and bought our first apartment. We financed 65% with a mortgage. I still remember the bank clerk in Karlstad laughing at me when he said:
“You people in Stockholm are crazy. Who pays 42,000 kronor per square meter for an apartment?”
Ten years later we sold that apartment for 80,500 kronor per square meter.
Our current apartment was bought at 74,000 kronor per square meter. Today it’s valued at 129,000 kronor per square meter.
During our housing journey we had to sell our entire stock portfolio twice to buy the apartments. Both times it took us about three years before we could start investing again.
We have now been back in the stock market for almost 10 years. Our apartment is mortgaged to just under 30% of its value. We could pay off the entire loan tomorrow and still have investments left — but for now we believe it’s smarter to let the money work harder in the market.
If the situation changes, we won’t hesitate to adjust our strategy.
