Today the market is supposed to open without the usual circus of geopolitical fireworks, surprise data bombs or central-bank speeches. Of course it isn’t that simple – there is always something – but the noise level feels unusually low. That in itself is interesting.
Yesterday’s dip-buy gave me a smaller position in CNC. Not a forever-hold. More like a 1–2 year trade with a mental reservation. We’ll see.
What strikes me more is the scale of the swings. In the past week our portfolio has moved up and down more in a single day than we collected in dividends during the entire year of 2017.
Days like this are useful. They train me not to treat the numbers as “real money.” They are just cells in a spreadsheet. Because right now you can lose almost a year’s salary before lunch and get it back (or more) the next session.
That detachment is the only way to stay sane when the market decides to remind you how little control you actually have.
How do you keep the mental distance when the daily swings start looking like real life money?
