One consequence of Tesla’s Robocab that perhaps wasn’t the main intention is that it genuinely improves personal safety — especially for women.
While the statistical risk of being assaulted or raped in an Uber, Lyft, or traditional taxi is low in percentage terms, the absolute numbers are disturbingly high. Uber alone reported over 5,000–6,000 cases of sexual assault or rape in the United States between 2017 and 2022.
A trip with a Tesla Robocab is not only driverless — it’s also often 40–60% cheaper than comparable Uber or Lyft rides.
For many, especially women traveling alone at night, this combination of significantly improved safety and lower price is a game changer.
Sometimes technological progress solves problems we didn’t even dare hope for.
